Stained or Yellowed Teeth

What causes Yellowed or Stained Teeth?

There are many reasons why your teeth can become discolored. The main reason is that as adults, we simply enjoy stronger adult foods, beverages and have habits that can stain tooth enamel.

The most common causes of teeth stains are drinks that contain "tannin." Now tannin was once used to tan leather hides, today it's meaning is almost anything of a dark nature that will discolor when it comes into contact. These types of drinks would be coffee, wine, strong tea, and even some highly dissolved solids water all have the ability to discolor your teeth.

Yellow teeth can be caused from the nicotine in smoking. Tobacco stained teeth will anturally turn a dull or yellow color with the continued application of nicotine. All tobacco products including snuff, smoke-less products, pipes, etc. all can contribute to your teeth stains.
Age also plays a role and the once bright smile of early life turns into a set of useable though yellowed teeth.

Lastly, there is the possibility of yellow or stained teeth caused by medications taken previously. One popular antibiotic, tetracycline, has been shown to cause stained teeth. Although a great drug, one of tetracycline side effects has been permanent discoloration of tooth enamel.

The good news with all these causes however is that the previous gleaming white smiles enjoyed earlier in life can be revived with available at home teeth bleaching products. Almost everyone can benefit from the use of an home tenth whitening system. These products are safe, easy to use and deliver noticeable results fast!

Dental Related Definitions & Terms:

  • Occlusion -- This term is used to describe how the teeth of the upper and lower jaws fit against one another when the jaw is closed.

  • Non Vital Whitening -- This can be used for teeth that have had a root canal procedure performed on them, because root canaled teeth often do not respond well to other whitening methods. The dentist will put a whitener into the tooth and seal it up with a temporary filling, and after a while the tooth will whiten up from the inside out. (See also Vital Whitening).

  • Pulp -- Pulp includes all of the nerves, blood vessels and connective tissues that exist inside each tooth. (See below).
