From the Lowly Toothbrush to the Electric Toothbrush a World of Difference

The whole concept of a toothbrush is a relatively recent phenomenon that became part of the human experience only several hundred years ago. Yes, there are suggestions that ancient cultures used something similar to a toothbrush but generally speaking, the idea of brushing your teeth on a regular basis didn't really catch on until the end of the 1800's.

According to Wikipedia, It wasn't until World War II that the concept of brushing teeth really caught on in the U.S., in part due to the fact that it was part of American soldiers' regular daily duty to clean their teeth. It was a practice that they brought back to their home life after the conclusion of the war.

So the idea of oral hygiene and regular dental care really is a new idea.
The advent of the toothbrush was a bone with natural bristles.
From there, we advanced into synthetics that unlike natural bristles made it much more difficult for bacteria to breed in the brush itself.

In the mid 1960's we were treated to the electric toothbrush. Although only moving in an up and down motion, the idea of getting a better teeth brushing faster appealed to many. Initially battery operated only, the problem with these models was definitely in the power source. Once the design progressed to the point where an auto charge mechanism could be used, the electric toothbrush really came into it's own.

A simple use and recharge between uses did the trick making the electric toothbrush a great product for many. It's considered a must have by many older people who have difficulty holding tier hands up the necessary time to properly clean their teeth and the young who always seem to be in a hurry.

The latest incarnation of the electric toothbrush is the so called "sonicare" type brush. These sonic toothbrush designs spin instead of moving up and down. Due to the speed, they are much more effective at removing plaque and food particles between your teeth.

We've come a long way from a bone and hog hair toothbrush to the latest sonic - ally charged teeth brushing system
